Under the Sink

As the ingredients journey continues, some of my beloved products must be retired.  As we learn more about how these ingredients are made and from whence they came, we must for the sake of self love...retire them.  Under the sink they go!

KeraCare: Twist & Define Cream

E-mail Print PDF

Well, it looks like there are a number of lines that are expanding their offerings to the natural haired diva.  Have you noticed the uptick?  Marketing is amazing, isn't it?

Being in a bind both financially and time-wise, I stumbled upon this product in the local beauty supply store.  I can remember using KeraCare products when I used to provide chemical services.  Let's begin the review.

Fragrance

This product has a perfume-like fragrance.  It reminds me of a musk.

Consistency

The texture is not has heavy as a butter, but more like a light cream.

Functionality

The product appears to absorb pretty well and does not leave a visible residue, which is great. I tried this product on a client who requested a twist-out.  This was a first time product for us both. The tag line on the product reads, "For silky shiny twists & twist outs".  The product held true to the tag line. I noticed a very slippery, almost Jheri Curl-like feel at the end.  I am very open with my clients and shared this observation with her.

Organic Root Stimulator: Anti-frizz Olive Oil Glossing Polisher

E-mail Print PDF

This was one of those products that I tried and used quite a bit.  Truth be told, I did not like it.   Did it decrease frizz?  Sometimes.  How about the glossing effect?  It sure did.  I most certainly cannot call this product a lie, but there is more to be told.

I've had this stuff for a long time.  I remember using it and loving the gloss effect, but what I did not like was all of the dirt!  Oh my goodness was my hair dirty when I washed it!  I got through approximately two thirds of the bottle until I noticed just how much dirt my hair had accumulated.  Ew!

On the bright side, it did have an okay fragrance.  I personally prefer to speak positivity, but I had to let you know that this product goes under the sink awaiting the next product swap.

Ingredients: cycomethicone, methyl soyate, isopropyl myristate, stearoxy dimethicone, coco nucifera (coconut oil), methyl olivate, crambe salicylate, geraniol, hexyl cinnamic aldehyde, lilial, d'limonene, linalool, lyral, alpha iso methyl ionone

Tom's of Maine Natural Antiplaque Tartar control plus Whitening Toothpaste

E-mail Print PDF

I am actually a repeat customer of this toothpaste.  I try a number of products and end up leaving the empty tube, bottle or container on my top shelf as a reminder to write a review.  Well, tonight is the night!

When I first decided to write this review I had every intention on talking about how wonderful the toothpaste was, how it made my mouth feel and etc.  Well, I picked up the empty tube to make sure that I could still read the ingredients list.  Otherwise, I couldn't give it a solid review.  Here's what I found:

Ingredients: calcium carbonate, glycerin, water, xylitol, hydrated silica, zinc citrate trihydrate, sodium lauryl sulfate, peppermint oil, carrageenan, sodium bicarbonate

This toothpaste has been placed 'Under the Sink' because of its SLS content.  Truly, I didn't want to do it.  It's just a part of the journey....

Under the Sink they Go!

E-mail Print PDF

Hopefully, you have been checking out the ingredients lists that I include in each product review.  I am regularly investigating ingredients, learning about their pros and cons and posting my findings in The Kitchen.

I have been using some of these products for YEARS and it's kind of like a break-up.  I'm finally learning the truth about these products that I have sworn by for sooo many years. Ow, it hurts!  I love these products, but I love me more. LOL!  I selected three products that I just had to let go and here they are:

Keri Lotion - Original Formula

E-mail Print PDF

Keri Lotion Original Formula

UPDATE: As much as I hated to do it, I had to put this product under the sink.  The ingredient with the second highest concentration is mineral oil.  It also contains parabens! Ew!

---

Keri Lotion - Original Formula has been a favorite of mine for quite some time.  I can remember hating lotions with a 'runny' consistency.  They often left me unnecessarily ashy for no reason.  Thick in consistency and rich in ingredients, this lotion works extremely well.  I am not sure if it is still the case now, but I remember this lotion was used in hospitals some time ago.  It was included in the skincare kit for patients.

EcoStyler: Olive Oil Styling Gel

Oh boy!  Now, this is a tough one.  Natural after natural, vlogger after vlogger shows so much love to this product.  I went and purchased this gel because I saw Sally's was having a sale.  It took me months to use it.

One of the first things I did when I walked up on this gel in the store was read the label.  I was not impressed.  You see, the ingredients list had some good things, but it also had some not so good things.  So, why are all my natural hair lovelies raving about this gel!?  After going through the process of rolling my eyes at the gel, putting it down, walking away and returning to it several times I decided to go ahead and purchase the less than $3 container of gel.

So, I'm now on the bandwagon.  The gel sits on my dresser, in a bag and finally back on my dresser over the span of a few months.  One day I decided to just go for it!

The Kitchen: An Ingredients Journey

Well folks, we have decided to consolidate.  Once upon a time we shared ingredient information with you via a sub-domain.  Beginning today, we're bringing that content inside.  We want this to be in all-inclusive experience for you. The Kitchen will now live on on this very website!  No need to venture off to another website!

One of the goals of All Tressed Up is to create awareness in an effort to help you make the right choices when selecting products.  Ultimately, this will help you choose more natural products.  As you already know, the skin is the largest organ of the body.  We are smothering it with lotions, potions and scrubs that are full of chemicals.  Let's make well informed product choices and put an end to supporting products that are designed to produce profit while ignoring things such as side-effects after continued use.
