Many black hairstylists can agree that there is certain level of skill and artistry required to be able to successfully use those infamous marcel curling irons. You know, the irons that have to warm up in the stove? Having retired my irons and focused on natural hair, the Golden Supreme Braid Cutter is the only reason why I still have my stove. The two pronged handles are reminiscent of the classic marcel irons, so it was an easy transition.
When braiding with synthetic fiber, the ends can be sealed with heat. This can be in the form of fire (usually a cigarette lighter) or boiling temperature water. This tool allows you to seal many braids at once. It has definitely expedited a few of my braiding sessions. The lighters get jammed, and have the ability to wreak havoc on your fingers. There is also the increased liability of an open flame that you have to consider.
My only issue with this tool is the melted hair that gets stuck to the tool. You also have to be careful with that hair. If you return the tool to the stove with melted hair attached, you may be in for quite the surprise. I have experienced mini fires in my stove, popping and massive amounts of smoke. Be certain that the melted hair is removed before you return your tool to the stove.
Warning: Handles get extremely hot! You many have to invest in those protective covers or use a towel to protect your hands.
Depending on the situation, I have swapped between the tool and the traditional lighter. I have found that sometimes the ends are not as sealed as I would like and I have to 'touch-up' the ends with the lighter. This is fine by me because it certainly beats having to wait for the entire braid to melt.
I recommend this tool to professionals who are familiar with using the stove and marcel irons and who are looking for more efficient ways to get through a full head of braids.
