Tool Review: Pipecleaners

E-mail Print PDF

Who knew that those inexpensive little items used to create trees for my son's school project would become a hair styling tool?!  Well, that is exactly what happened!

After nine months of transitioning to locs, I became a bit bored with with my locs.  I was updone, fuzz had been accepted and the pulled back braid style was simply getting old.  I had to try something new.  After attempting flexi-rods on a client with locs, I found that the results were not my favorite.  Pipe-cleaners are inexpensive miniature flexi-rods!

I first folded each pipe-cleaner in half.  My hair just wasn't long enough for the full length of the tool.  I then took three locs at a time and wrapped them in spiral formation around the folded pipe-cleaner; exactly like the flexi-rod.  The number of locks you include may vary depending on the size of your locks.

This is also a great option for individual two-strand twists.

Scunci: Upzing

E-mail Print PDF

Some time ago I was sent this hair accessory and asked to be creative with using the Upzing. After receiving the Upzing, I must say that I was a bit skeptical.  The package shows a lot of blonde and straight hair.

Seeing as how I am embracing these locks, I am sure that you can understand my skepticism.  Looks can be deceiving.  Never judge a tool by its cover.

Removing the Upzing

I have a history of breaking things or being a tad bit too rough.  Well, the Upzing was no exception.  The accessory was beautifully beaded and the ideas were flowing until it was time to remove it from the packaging.  In my excitement, I opted to rip the accessory away from the package and with that poor decision I popped a few elastic bands and in turn lost a few beads.  Even with the loss of those beads, the tool was effective.

Word to the wise:  Grab a pair of scissors and cut the two plastic pieces connecting the accessory to the package.  Do not rip the Upzing from the package.

Goody: Elastic Bands

E-mail Print PDF

I have this secret vendetta against bobby pins.  Sure, they serve their purpose and I will use them if necessary, but I just don't like to use very many and avoid them whenever possible.

What I tend to use instead (especially for my locked, braided or twisted clients) are rubber bands.  Sure, we've been told that we should avoid them, but with minimal winding they work beautifully! The GOODY Elastic-Band keep the hair together and does not have be wound very tightly at all.  I love the fact that the rubber bands are offered in a variety of shapes and colors; including transparent.

Goody offers two versions of elastic bands (standard and ouchless), so check them out to see which you prefer.

Strawllers

E-mail Print PDF

Some time has passed since you've heard anything about Strawllers.  The winnings have been received and spent!  Thanks again to everyone who took the time to vote and share.  As promised, I am now providing you with a review of the tool.

What are Strawllers?

Strawllers are cylindrical tools with holes that provide you with the ability to set your hair in a curly style.  Strawllers can be used on straight, curly and even tightly coiled hair.

How do they compare to flexi-rods and standard rollers?

Compared to flexi-rods, these tools yield a faster drying time. This is due to the holes that you will find on each individual Strawller.  These holes allow air to flow freely. Like flexi-rods, they create a bit of bulk under a hooded dryer.  You also have the option of air drying, which again is yields a faster drying time than that of flexi-rods.

Standard rollers will not give you the elongated curl that the Strawllers provide.  While you can roll the hair in the same manner, the physical roller is simply not long enough.  Fortunately, Strawllers come in short and long lengths to accommodate those with varying lengths throughout their hair or options for those with extremely long or short hair.  Strawllers also come in a variety of circumferences even as small as the size of a drinking straw.

The Cool Cap

E-mail Print PDF

I found out about this product online, thought it was cool (no pun intended) and tucked it away into memory.  Some time thereafter, the creator of this invention reached out to me via Twitter notifying me of The Cool Cap.

The Cool Cap boasts to keep your client cool under the dryer and cut dryer time in half.  So, the question is - did it work?  Well, I purchased one dozen cool caps and tested them on twist outs, flexi-rod sets (relaxed hair) and even locked hair.

Working with the caps

How difficult can a extra large shower cap be to use?  I had a hard time (at first).  The fact they they are packaged individually and held together with a loose rubber band made it very easy to use.  After watching the video on using the cap, I knew to removed the perforated lining for drying.  (The perforated lining is used for deep conditioning.) There was some extra 'baggage' going on.  My clients with glasses were able to keep the cap up with their glasses.  I later used a strip to keep the cap from falling over the clients' eyes.

After reviewing the literature again, I found that I could have slid the cap onto the entire hood of the dryer - not just the rim of the hood.  I'll be certain to try that next time.

After Affects: Natural Handmade Goat's Milk Soap

I have heard a lot about goat's milk for hair and C. Dawn was kind enough to send me some of this goodness in the form of a bar of soap.

Packaging

The soap was labeled with the company brand and shrink-wrapped.  Nice touch.  It's something about small businesses with big business mentality that get me.  The shrink-wrapping was very appropriate for the soap.

Fragrance

Yum.  I could smell it through the plastic.  I had the passion blossom variety.

Functionality

Natural soap makers get me every time.  You can see little pieces of natural goodness throughout.  The ridges in the soap made for better handling, which I most definitely appreciated.  I'm accustomed to using the Trader Joe brand, and it has no ridges.  If you're worried about dropping the soap, she's got you covered.  Nice touch.

Calendula

I was first introduced to this herb through the best darn fashion manicurist in the world - Ms. Angel Williams!  I inquired about natural remedies for my skin because I deal with this annoying breakout each and every summer. Ugh!  It is totally a killer for sandal season!

She told me about calendula and shared that it was in fact a healing herb.  Calendula is also great for wound healing and yields a soothing feeling for irritated skin.  The tea of calendula can be drank and is rumored to aid with bladder infections, menstrual cramps and even pink eye!
