One exciting thing about the natural hair journey is that there are a number of ways to express yourself. T-shirts are one way to get your point across (as if your hair were not enough). I now own a total of four 'natural hair' t-shirts.
I received these t-shirts in the mail and wondered exactly how I would review them, so here goes...
The company
7evolution. When I saw the name I was immediately intrigued. I'm huge on numbers. I absolutely love the way they broke down the meaning of the number 7 and evolution. Here is what 7evolution is all about in a nutshell:
"Our main goal is to encourage the love of self, others and God through thought provoking, authentic and inspirational messages."
They create have their own collection of designs and will also create custom designs.
The website
The very first page showcases the graphic design ability of 7evolution. Usually, I am a huge anti splash page person, but in this case, I'm okay.
I did find that the website loaded a bit slow for my taste. On an impatient day, this could result in the loss of a sale.
T-shirt #1: Top Ten
Fit and Feel
I loved the way this shirt fit! It hugged just the right places without feeling too constricting. The material used was very soft as well. It was not one of those rough cotton t-shirts. You can tell they put some research into finding the right material.
Design & Messaging
The t-shirt actually has the illusion of layered t-shirts. So, it looked as it I were wearing a white t-shirt underneath. The front simply showcased the company name (7evolution) and a custom image that is routinely used (company branding).
The back of the shirt listed the Top Ten Reasons I Love My Hair. Now, I was okay with most of the reasons but there was one that just didn't sit well with me. Before I go into why, allow me to shed light.
Although I have made the decision to wear my hair naturally, I will not pretend as if I never wore a relaxer, loved a relaxer and provided relaxer services. Furthermore, I try to avoid the natural vs. relaxed vs. color-treated debate. So, the top ten reasons displayed on the shirt are as follows:
- God wouldn't have it any other way.
- I no longer fear the rain.
- I kicked the 'Creamy Crack' and won't go back.
- Curly Girls have more fun.
- My hair is free and so is my mind.
- I love getting in touch with my roots.
- I can do that with my hair too.
- I get it from my Momma.
- It's addictive, I can't keep my hands out of it.
- Real women do it naturally.
It was the last one that had me feeling a little awkward. A few others did as well, but that last one was really awkward to me. I'm not sure that I'll be wearing this shirt often. 'Oh, girl it's just a shirt!' Uh-huh, but I'm big on words. On a more positive note... Reason number 8 made me smile a lot!
T-shirt #2: I love my Afro!
Fit and Feel
This shirt fit like a standard t-shirt, which makes it great for tying. The material felt the same.
Design & Messaging
Now this shirt I loved! It was all about loving the Afro. The silhouette of a woman sporting her afro with large earrings was a great idea! Very cute! I also love how they gave some self love "7evolution rocks too!" That was cute.
Toward the bottom of the shirt the message 'Real women do it naturally' was written in a cute font. LOL! Obviously, I could have done without that line, but the eye goes directly to the puff (as usual). Yes, I could have ironed the shirt. LOL!
