EcoStyler: Olive Oil Styling Gel

E-mail Print PDF

Oh boy!  Now, this is a tough one.  Natural after natural, vlogger after vlogger shows so much love to this product.  I went and purchased this gel because I saw Sally's was having a sale.  It took me months to use it.

One of the first things I did when I walked up on this gel in the store was read the label.  I was not impressed.  You see, the ingredients list had some good things, but it also had some not so good things.  So, why are all my natural hair lovelies raving about this gel!?  After going through the process of rolling my eyes at the gel, putting it down, walking away and returning to it several times I decided to go ahead and purchase the less than $3 container of gel.

So, I'm now on the bandwagon.  The gel sits on my dresser, in a bag and finally back on my dresser over the span of a few months.  One day I decided to just go for it!

Fragrance and Consistency

It smells and feels like any other gel.  Nothing was really different in this area.

Functionality

A client of mine shared her love for this product and explained that she loved it for curl definition.  Curl definition, eh?  Okay, so I went through the process of applying this gel to my hair in small sections for curl definition.  Well, my client was right.

I had curls.  Crunchy curls, but they were curls.  I decided to put this gel to the test and wear my hair for several days with light water mist refreshes every other day.

Well, the experience was great!  As much as I hate to admit it, the gel works.  Flaking was not an issue and my hair was soft with movement.  Day one was crunchy, but the following days were just fine.  Someone even commented that it looked like it took me a long time to do my hair - and this was day three or four hair, yall!  (Note: I threw a little flower in my hair for added pizazz...lol!)

Okay EcoStyler lovers, I see you!

The closest I've had to this curl definition was after using Curls Milkshake Light (which was much more fragrant and natural I might add).

After months of tinkering with gel after gel (natural only), Simone and I were having a tough time finding gels that gave her the hold she wanted.  Well, a little dab'll do ya is what they say, right?  Eco-Styler was the winner for this loc transitioner.

We all know that finding the right products for natural hair can be expensive. This is a inexpensive way to experience curl definition and great hold.  Now, once I find a natural gel that is comparable to this, I'll let you know.

Investment: approximately $3

Ingredients: Water, Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, PVP, Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydrxymethylglycinate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, Olive oil, Fragrance, Blue #1, Yellow #11, LOVE AND PRIDE

The last ingredient is what made me roll my eyes.  How are you going to add love and pride as an ingredient with all those chemicals? Whew!  As you can see, this is a tough review for me.  It works though.  It works.  I even tried the brown variation on a client and she had excellent hold.  Now, my challenge is to find a comparable natural gel. Do you know of any?

Sampling Poetisa's Palette

I must tell you that it always excites me to find goodies in my mailbox.  This product line is called Poetisa's Palette and prides itself on natural products for the hair and skin.

Before we go into the actual products, I would like to share my impression of the product delivery and more:

Packaging

I really like the small jars.  When it comes to natural products, it is a must that I be able to get every last drop out of the package.  Jars are good.  Natural products are usually not cheap!  Nothing should go to waste.  Great choice!

There was also a personal touch that I really enjoyed.  There was a post-card with instructions on how to use each product as well as warnings.  For example, you are advised not to use a specific product on the face.  I really enjoyed this personal touch.

The Kitchen

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

This ingredient can be found in many of our hair and skincare products.  Its primary function is to remove dirt, oil and buildup regardless of the surface.  I say this because the same ingredient that we spread on our body surfaces is also used (in higher concentrations of course) in engine degreasers and floor cleaners!  Can you imagine using the same chemical to clean your face/hair to clean your engine?!
