Lily of the Desert: Aloe Vera Gel

E-mail Print PDF

With an everlasting curiosity for substances that support the body from the inside out, it is no wonder that I have a habit of perusing the Vitamin Shoppe.  I tried a gel not too long ago and while it did produce positive results, I was a bit disturbed by the fragrance and after reading the ingredients label I found that there were a number of ingredients that just had too many syllables, x's, z's and numbers.  It was just too much.

Now, I am not one to throw away my hard earned money, so I'm still going to use it.  In the meantime, that doesn't mean I can't explore other options.  I wanted a gel and I wanted a natural gel.

Vitamin Shoppe to the rescue!  While perusing the aisles, I stumbled upon this goodness - Lily Of The Desert - Aloe Vera Gel, (Inner Fillet).  There were other variations of this healing plant available - whole leaf and juice were also available.  I went with the inner fillet because I can remember hearing stories of folks soothing burns by using the aloe fresh from the plant - breaking the leaf vertically in half.  My hair could use some healing.  Inner Fillet it is!

Fragrance

There really is no fragrance to report.  It is pretty neutral.

Texture

You actually have to squeeze the gel out of the bottle.  It does not flow.  I found this to be pretty cool.  The gel has a weird feel.  My fingertips are not accustomed to touching such pure substances.  Overall, I knew I was working with the real deal.  Part of me wanted to eat it.  Knowing full well that I could have, I chose not to because I would be using this on my hair.  (I have a quirk about using the same bottles for consumption and hair experimentation.)

Functionality

I actually mixed this with my favorite...coconut oil.  I figured I could not go wrong with this combination!  I worked extremely well.  There was curl definition and when two-strand twisted, I experienced very supple twists.  The bottle tells you to refrigerate after opening, so be certain to follow those instructions for optimal use.  If an extremely firm hold is what you are looking for, this is not your solution.  While it will produce a subtle hold, I would recommend using this in the summer or spring months when curl definition is your aim.

Investment: Approxmately $5.00 USD

Ingredients: Aloe
