Adiva Naturals: Mango Natural Hair and Skin Conditioner

E-mail Print PDF

This review speaks to the quality of this product.  Allow me to give you a bit of background.  Back in 2010, I attended an expo where I met the lovely woman (and her mother) behind the Adiva Naturals product line.  Here we are in the third quarter of 2012 and I have just finished using the product - on purpose!

Packaging

What attracted me to the line originally was the booth.  I was enticed by the earth tones and that fragrance.  Whoa!  You turn the corner and it just grabbed you!  Her earth-tone product labels include instructions, ingredients and applicable imagery.  With this particular product, I would have preferred a different lid.  I found that it was a bit challenging to remove the product from the container- especially after it settled a bit.

Consistency

Normally, the consistency is nice and creamy.  It is similar to that of a thick oil mixed with a little bit of grease.  Over time however, some of the ingredients separate and you can actually see the pellets used to make the product.  If the product gets too cool, it will solidify a bit.  What I have come to learn is that many product lines add unnatural thickeners and other components to maintain consistency.  I would rather have a product that changes state and works regardless of state.  It went from cream to oil, to solid and back and still worked the same!  Love it!

Beautiful Textures: Moisture Butter - Whipped Curl Creme

E-mail Print PDF

It was a typical day at the salon and in walks my gorgeous client with a little shopping bag.  I paid it no mind until she spoke.

Client: "Okay, I don't know if this is okay, but I got a new product and wanted your to try it to see what you think."

Me: "Okay, let me take a look." *Flipping over to read label immediately* "Eh, for the most part the ingredients appear to be okay, but there are a few things that are questionable."

Client: "Yeahhhhh..." (She knows me.)

Me: "Let's go for it!"

Packaging

It is really nice.  I've seen the Beautiful Textures line in Sally's and saw the product being used in action at the World Natural Hair Show.  The bright color really makes it stand out and causes a bit on interest.

Fragrance

The product smells heavenly!  It filled my salon with a lovely fragrance.  My mentor stopped in and was taken aback by the amazing fragrance and said that it reminded her of bananas.  It really does smell great!

Shea Terra Organics Foot Rituals Volcanic Pedicure Scrub

E-mail Print PDF

Pedi time is in full effect! Time to bring out the Shea Terra Volcanic Pedicure Scrub. It says no petroleum (big no no) and no synthetic fragrances, but a big fat YES to volcanic stone whipped into a shea butter creme infused with peppermint oi!

Okay, why did the Peppermint Patty commercial just pop into my head, the one with the old dude in the recliner….LOL!  “When I bite into a York Peppermint Patty I get the sensation I’m riding…..” Yeah, it feels like that!

Ingredients: spring water, shea butter oil (butyrospermum parkii), volcanic stone (pumice), USDA Certified Organic shea butter (butyrospermum parkii), vegetable emulsifying wax, peppermint essential oil (mentha piperita), citric acid, naturally derived preservative (glucono delta-lactone), menthol, sodium benzoate

Investment: $16.00 USD/4 oz.

Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal

E-mail Print PDF

This review has been on the back burner for quite some time.  After hearing about the health scares as it relates to deodorant, I thought it would be a great idea to try a natural deodorant.  After attending the Bellydancers of Color (BOCA) conference a few years ago, this deodorant was recommended.

The Deodorant

The product comes in a variety of fragrances and types.  There is a crystal with the texture of a rock that you would moisten prior to each use.  I have heard great things from folks who use the stone.

The version that I used is actually a roll-on version, which I thought would be more convenient. (Yes, that is a Michael Jackson glove in the background...Ow! Why? Because I can.)  Moving right along...

The Reasons

After reading about the possible connection between the aluminum content, parabens and  breast cancer; I had to explore the options.

Review: Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips

E-mail Print PDF

Some time ago, Angel shared the Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Strips.  Well, I just had to try them!  While perusing the clearance section of my local Ulta store, I noticed that they had the strips on sale for half price!  I love a sale!

Needless to say, I snagged these babies and tucked them away for a quiet day.  The quiet day arose on Mother's Day.  Not only did I get to sleep in and receive breakfast in bed, I also had the opportunity to do some 'girly' stuff.  Yessss!!!!  Thanks to my guys!!!!  Love you!

Okay, so back to the nails...

Ease of use

I loved how easy it was to apply the nail strips.  The small box comes with a set of instructions telling you exactly what to do and how to do it.  I love that.  I am no nail pro, folks - not even a little bit!  We have Angel Williams for that!

Tom's of Maine Natural Moisturizing Body Bar

I will admit that I am a procrastinator and somewhat of a poor planner.  I had to purchase this natural moisturizing body bar because I knew that I would not be able to make it to my beloved Trader Joe's for the soap that I love and would need to use the next day.  I went to a local grocery store and fortunately they had a natural care aisle.

I actually enjoy many of the Tom's of Maine products so I was drawn to that particular section.  After reading the label, I was intrigued and made the purchase.

Sniff

Lavender.  That is exactly what the box read and that was the predominant fragrance.  Lavender is known for its ability to relax.  What a lovely shower experience when you're a tad stressed!  This bar gave me an aromatherapy and cleansing session all in one.

Panthenol

During my client consultations, I ask prospective clients to bring in the products they are currently using. We review the products and I make recommendations based on the condition of their hair.  I consider myself to be knowledgeable about some ingredients, but have no problem admitting that I am unclear about others.  One of the ingredients that I commonly see on ingredients lists is panthenol.

Through my reading, I have heard many consider it to be a 'hair plumper', moisturizer...you name it!  After seeing it on a number of products that receive natural hair love, I became a bit curious about the ingredient.  I did my research and came up with my very own understanding of what this ingredient does for our hair and skin.

What is it?

Panthenol is a substance that is commonly used in skin and hair care products.  You may also hear it coined as 'pro-vitamin B'.

Where does it come from?

The substance can be derived from plant, animal or synthetically created.  Based on my findings, there is no way to tell where the instance in your particular product derives.  Many natural or vegan products may include labeling to notify you that the product contains no animal products or may even go as far to place '(plant derived)' behind the ingredient.
