Andre Talks Hair!

E-mail Print PDF

Because I have always felt some type of way about the whole hair typing system, I decided to go to the source and figure out where all the hype began.

Andre Talks Hair!, published in 1997, is actually a great read.  I love reading books written by hairstylists because it helps me in three areas - confirmation, inspiration and learning. If you're looking for a great gift to give your stylist, one written by a fellow stylist is a great idea!

Confirmation

There were several techniques that Walker mentioned in his book that I have been doing and so it made me feel accomplished.  Check me out...I'm doing what Oprah's hairstylist does.

Inspiration

I was inspired by Walker's story regarding his first encounter with Oprah.  I won't give you all the details, but in essence he took a chance and it worked!  Amazing!

Learning

There were several things I learned; specifically about gray hair that really made me smile.  I cannot wait to share that information with my graying clients.  Reading is fundamental, folks.

Hair Typing: Has my opinion changed?

No.  I still don't like it.  What I will say is that Walker does not go as hard as some of the adopters of this system.  I see why he did the typing system.  It is an easy way to group product selection, hair style options and hair cuts (in some cases).  The only letter-number combination I will use is those needed for bra shopping or hair extensions.  My clients will not be categorized.  That's just me.

I agree with the no need for hair typing thing. Black people have too many hair issues as it is. It seems to me adding in hair typing has the potential to turn into another case of "good hair/bad hair". Why can't we just have OUR hair & be done with it? :D

I agree as well. Hair should only be treated on an individual basis. Hair like people are quite unique! My choice of the Masai look reveals that my genetic code created at least 3 different hair types on my head alone (fine and straight in the front, wavy in the middle and nappy in the kitchen). Note I did not mention the sides...LOL!!

Thank you ladies for commenting. I agree that it can create a further division of good/bad hair.

Good point about the different types on one head of hair! That is so true! For many of us, our crowns have the tightest coils. How beautiful is that play on words?!?!

Well, ummmm I don't know exactly how to share this one with you.  We'll just say that this body bar is very special.  Now, you all know that I get on this peppermint fix during the cooler months. The Burt's Bees Fabulously Fresh Peppermint & Rosemary Body Bar is no exception!

Packaging

Burt's Bees always does a great job with the packaging.  Using its TerraSkin™ technology, to protect the body bar is an excellent choice.  The wrapper degrades back to powdered stone!  Impressive!

Phthalates

We are already aware that products should be labeled with the ingredients.  More and more you are probably noticing labels that read ________ FREE.  Phthalates (pronounced fal-ates) can easily fill one of these blanks.  That's right, we've got another chemical on our hands, folks!

What is it?
A chemical compound, phthalates, is also know as a plasticizer.  In the beauty world, this chemical compound can be found in nail polish, makeup (maintaining the color) and lotions (even spreading).  Phthalates are also responsible for making your fragrance last longer.
