Textured Tresses: The Ultimate Guide to Maintaining and Styling Natural Hair

E-mail Print PDF

Textured TressesTextured Tresses: The Ultimate Guide to Maintaining and Styling Natural Hair is yet another excellent read as it celebrates the versatility of natural hair.  I read this book in one sitting a few years ago and then again while on vacation.  It was even better the second time!

This book is filled with illustrations, step-by-step instructions, hints of spirituality, product and tool recommendations.  Diane Da Costa is an avid supporter of textured tresses with an understanding that the decision to chemically alter one's God-given hair structure belongs to the individual.  There is even a small section about caring for chemically treated hair.

The tone used in this work is one of self-actualization, recollection and appreciation.  Da Costa is a trusted hairstylist who is not afraid to share her techniques and products of choice with those who choose to purchase the book.  She tells stories of her encounters with celebrity clients and even the marvelous blessings she has received such as features in Essence magazine and a host of celebrity clients.

What I Love

The Foreword. I don't think I have read such a wonderful forward ever!  Da Costa requested that her client, Blair Underwood craft the foreword for the book.  My, oh my did she make an excellent choice.  There is something about a man with intellect that just...whooooooo!  Underwood compares the hair follicle to the male genitalia in a way that completely left me awestruck.  That's all I'll say about it because I want you to read it for yourself.

Tui Oil (by Carol's Daughter) was a recommended product.

Behind the Chair Encounters. As a fellow stylist, it is always lovely to hear the stories of my fellow hair artists and the fact that many of these clients were celebrities adds a dreamy effect for any stylist.

There is so much more in this book than I am highlighting here.  Da Costa goes into salon professionals, healthy diet, hair loss and disorders.  I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about textured tresses from the inside out.

This particular product was included in the gift bag for the Loving Your Hair with Natural Care workshop hosted by Felicia Leatherwood.  Prior to the event, I had not heard of the product line and was pleasantly surprised after using and researching the company.  As the ingredients journey continues, it is always a pleasure to be introduced to a new natural product.

Grapeseed Oil

When it comes to natural beauty this natural oil has many benefits.

Health Benefits

According to a study University of Maryland report, grapeseed oil has been proven to lower cholesterol and high blood pressure.  In addition the extract has inhibited the growth of cancer cells (in test tubes only).

If you have time to relax a local massage table, this may be the oil you want to request as it decreases stress in the body.  Because it comes from grapes, you can definitely consume this oil.  This oil is naturally low in cholesterol and due to its actual vitamin and mineral content, can actually be a safe alternative.
