Thank God I'm Natural--The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair

Thank God I'm NaturalLet me begin by saying this...I read this book in two days.  *drops the mic*  I could not put the book down!  Essence Magazine calls it "...the natural hair Bible".  Thank God I'm Natural--The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair is an excellent read.  Chris-Tia Donaldson does an excellent job of providing facts, true life stories and even soliciting the credibility of dermatologists.

The voice she uses in this book is very comforting.  This is by no means a "I'm gonna make you feel bad about that relaxer" type of book.  This is good information, a true life story and so much more!

Donaldson takes us on a journey of her personal experiences as a black woman, Harvard student/graduate and finally as an employee at a major law firm.  As I was reading the book, it was reminiscent of having a conversation with one of my sister girls...seriously.

Oh, how I wish this book was around all those times I folded back in the day.

Reasons why I love this book:

  • Image Gallery: In addition to the personal testimonies, there are a host of natural hairstyle images for inspiration.  This is key because oftentimes we get into a mindset and believe that being natural is synonymous with wearing a fro or wearing locs - not true and Chris-Tia Donaldson agrees while showing us the proof and versatility of natural tresses via a beautiful image gallery.
  • Debunking the Myths: Yet another reason why I love this book is because she takes the time to debunk several myths about natural hair.  An example of one of the myths - Natural Hair is Unprofessional.  Through casual conversation, this is a concern I come across often.
  • Glossary: Donaldson takes the time to define the terms she uses in the book and not only that; she even includes ingredients, yall! YES!
  • Recipes: There are a number of recipes available in this book and many of them can be done directly from your kitchen.

I recommend this book to any woman with kinky/curly hair or even women who are contemplating going natural.  This book will make you think and may even inspire you to give it a try.

Jane Carter: Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner

Jane Carter Nutrient Replenishing ConditionerSo, of course after the shampoo it is only right to condition.  As you've discovered in a previous post, shampoo usually strips your hair of its natural oils - hence the need for a conditioner.  After shampooing with Jane Carter's Moisture Nourishing Shampoo and rinsing, I applied the Jane Carter Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner .  Again, the smell was amazing.  It was very soft and subtle - reminiscent of a musk.  It reminded me of gardenia.

Panthenol

During my client consultations, I ask prospective clients to bring in the products they are currently using. We review the products and I make recommendations based on the condition of their hair.  I consider myself to be knowledgeable about some ingredients, but have no problem admitting that I am unclear about others.  One of the ingredients that I commonly see on ingredients lists is panthenol.

Through my reading, I have heard many consider it to be a 'hair plumper', moisturizer...you name it!  After seeing it on a number of products that receive natural hair love, I became a bit curious about the ingredient.  I did my research and came up with my very own understanding of what this ingredient does for our hair and skin.

What is it?

Panthenol is a substance that is commonly used in skin and hair care products.  You may also hear it coined as 'pro-vitamin B'.

Where does it come from?

The substance can be derived from plant, animal or synthetically created.  Based on my findings, there is no way to tell where the instance in your particular product derives.  Many natural or vegan products may include labeling to notify you that the product contains no animal products or may even go as far to place '(plant derived)' behind the ingredient.
