Let me start by telling you that Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America is by far one of my favorite books ever! I read this book years ago and I find myself quoting or paraphrasing portions of it as I'm discussing hair with folk. It stuck with me in a wonderful kind of way. Byrd and Tharp do a wonderful job of taking us on this journey of black hair - starting in Africa making a stop at Conk Corner and even passing through Jheri Curl Circle! It is a wonderful documentary in book form of Black hair.
There were moments in this book where I actually had to put the book down and take it all in. One of the realest moments for me was while reading the very first chapter entitled 'Black Hair in Bondage'. In all honesty, I shed a few tears, yall. We all know that our hair, our crowns mean so much to us. The authors go into detail about the significance of hair in Mother Africa. It was amazing to learn how your life circumstance, tribal affiliation and even condition of health could be determined merely by your choice of hairstyle and even your curl pattern. Wow!
As we continue this journey called life, I believe it is critical to understand your past so that you can understand where you are going and why. This book provides excellent information. It is put together beautifully and full of hair stories. Information is power, people! I actually read this book after I went natural and I finished the book with feelings of confirmation, love and gratitude. Regardless of your choice of style, let me tell you this book will definitely force you to reflect on various points in your life. Maybe you had a Jheri Curl, and afro or remember that good straightening comb.
I completely recommend this book - hands down. Take the journey and let us know what you thought! Untangle your roots...
