ESSENCE's 'Hot Hair' issue

E-mail Print PDF

All the hair and beauty lovers out there get a little excited with the 'Hot Hair' special edition issue of ESSENCE is set to make an appearance.  The magazine, my favorite by the way, does an excellent job of showcasing hairstyles with foundations of relaxed, natural and even weaved coifs.  There is so much diversity with hair, that it all must be respected and appreciated.  In my mind, hair is art.

This edition also includes product advice, hair care regimens and more!  One thing I particularly enjoyed about this issue was the fact that my city, Richmond, Va., represented!  Oh, yes we did!  Three salons in Richmond, Va. were thanked by ESSENCE (page 19):

Grow It: How to Grow Afro-Textured Hair to Maximum Lengths in the Shortest Time

E-mail Print PDF

There has been so much talk about Grow It: How To Grow Afro-Textured Hair To Maximum Lengths In The Shortest Time in the natural hair community that I thought I'd give this book a read.  Judging from the photos on the cover alone, Chicoro has clearly experienced growth.  While small in size, this book is full of factual information as well as a few enlightening moments.

A word of warning to those who are not passionate about hair - meaning the structure, bonds and the actual science of hair - your eyes may glaze while reading certain portions of this text.  Chicoro includes regimen, science and experience in this brief writing.  I found the book to bring me a few reminders and also expose some interesting techniques.

Andre Talks Hair!

E-mail Print PDF

Because I have always felt some type of way about the whole hair typing system, I decided to go to the source and figure out where all the hype began.

Andre Talks Hair!, published in 1997, is actually a great read.  I love reading books written by hairstylists because it helps me in three areas - confirmation, inspiration and learning. If you're looking for a great gift to give your stylist, one written by a fellow stylist is a great idea!

Confirmation

There were several techniques that Walker mentioned in his book that I have been doing and so it made me feel accomplished.  Check me out...I'm doing what Oprah's hairstylist does.

Queens: Portraits of Black Women and Their Fabulous Hair

E-mail Print PDF

Black women and their hair - it is such a serious matter.  We learned in Hair Story, just how deeply rooted our hair is (pun intended).  Hair told stories about tribal affiliations, marital status and in some cases our life events.

Authors Michael Cunningham and George Alexander do an excellent job of taking us on a journey meeting a variety of black women and learning more about what their hair means to them.  The use of black and white photography throughout gives the book a nostalgic feel.  Many of the interviews and comments will touch your heart.  The cover photo alone puts a smile on my face!

Nappily Ever After

E-mail Print PDF

This is one of the books I read prior to going natural.  To be a fictional story, Nappily Ever After is a surprisingly inspiring story.  Without telling you all about the book (if you have not read it), the story is about a woman who is questioning a number of things in her life - including her relationship.  She decides to cut off all of her hair and this decision changes her life in a number of ways.

Malikah Divine Wholistic Skincare: Sunshine of Lemongrass

Malikah Divine Wholistic Skincare: Sunshine of LemongrassOkay, I've been holding back on yall!  I have a shelf full of empty bottles that are awaiting a lovely review.  This one right here is something special!  I guess you can say that I was blessed to have minimal skin issues and so I've never really had a skin care regimen.  However, now that I am getting older wiser and my body is changing; so is my skin.

Panthenol

During my client consultations, I ask prospective clients to bring in the products they are currently using. We review the products and I make recommendations based on the condition of their hair.  I consider myself to be knowledgeable about some ingredients, but have no problem admitting that I am unclear about others.  One of the ingredients that I commonly see on ingredients lists is panthenol.

Through my reading, I have heard many consider it to be a 'hair plumper', moisturizer...you name it!  After seeing it on a number of products that receive natural hair love, I became a bit curious about the ingredient.  I did my research and came up with my very own understanding of what this ingredient does for our hair and skin.

What is it?

Panthenol is a substance that is commonly used in skin and hair care products.  You may also hear it coined as 'pro-vitamin B'.

Where does it come from?

The substance can be derived from plant, animal or synthetically created.  Based on my findings, there is no way to tell where the instance in your particular product derives.  Many natural or vegan products may include labeling to notify you that the product contains no animal products or may even go as far to place '(plant derived)' behind the ingredient.
