While caring for my mother's hair, she mentioned that she met a young lady who owns a natural hair care business in a local mall. One day I took it upon myself to find this place and when I did an interview had to follow!
I love to support small business and was delighted to find that this business was owned by three sisters. Really, they are blood sisters! I had the pleasure of meeting with two of them and if you read on you will see a grand treat just for you - readers of All Tressed Up!
The Story of Epic Curls
For decades curly girls have been on the prowl for the perfect hair product that will minimize frizz, maintain moisture and quite frankly produce positive results for their hair type. As you approach the Victoria’s Secret store in Regency Square Mall, look to your left and you will discover another great secret; especially for the curly girl – Epic Curls.
Epic Curls is a small retail location (kiosk) dedicated to helping women discover products that will work best for their hair. This curly boutique opened for business on February 10, 2012 and has since acquired a considerable following and loyal client base.
Owned by three sisters – Vanessa Mason, Semon Mason and Shanta Byrd – Epic Curls is becoming a favorite location for those interested in learning more about natural hair care products. While currently operating one physical location, the team anticipates expansion to other shopping malls in the near future. “We just want people to have healthy hair and to feel good about what is growing out of their scalp”, proclaims Vanessa Mason who is the product specialist on the team.

These three passionate business owners take pride in customer service. Visitors can expect to receive a client consultation (by Shanta or Vanessa) upon arrival. The consultation is designed to reveal your current hair concerns or issues, evaluate your current hair care regimen and finally recommend products that will help resolve your original hair concerns. “It’s very important that we teach each other how to take care of our hair”, states Shanta Byrd who serves as the manager and marketing specialist of the team.
The sisters insist that Epic Curls is for everyone. Each sister has a unique hair story. Vanessa, product specialist, has been a member of hair communities through each phase of her hair transition. She takes pride in knowing which products are effective for relaxed, transitioning and natural hair. Having experienced much trial and error without the aid of a hairstylist, she is equipped to help clients discover the most effective product selections. Both she and sister Shanta are currently wearing natural hair.
Semon Mason, director of operations, has made the decision to chemically relax her tresses. She believes in and uses the products offered by Epic Curls. Approximately ninety percent of the Epic Curls client base has natural hair, seven percent are transitioning and three percent are ‘other’.
No matter your ethnicity or hair state, there will definitely be something in store for you at Epic Curls. Education is a key objective for the business. The team agrees that oftentimes visitors will approach the kiosk never having heard of the brands they carry. “I like people to have an open mind because these products are the hidden gems out there on the market”, insists Vanessa. Some may even be apprehensive about approaching the kiosk however; there is certainly a lesson to be learned upon each visit.
Carrying coveted brands such as Qhemet Biologics, Darcy’s Botanicals and Jamaican Black Castor Oil to name a few, the team is confident in their product selections and encourage you to pay them a visit.
As a subscriber of this column, Epic Curls has agreed to offer a ten percent discount off any purchase from their online boutique at www.epiccurls.com or kiosk. Simply enter coupon code, ‘ALLTRESSEDUP’ during checkout or mention 'All Tressed Up' while visiting the kiosk
