Do you know this woman contacted me directly asking me what base I preferred? Imagine how it feels to hear someone say they will make a product especially for you! My custom blend was fantastic! Traci took some time out of her busy scheduling to answer a few questions for us. Let's meet the beautiful woman behind Satin Blends.
How did it all begin?
Satin Blends began as I was in search of a good product to use for my own skin and natural hair. I made a decision to become holistic and vegetarian in 2006. In addition to my lifestyle change, I decided to no longer perm my hair and go natural. I found a good organic product for my skin but it was very expensive. One day while at the 2009 Natural Hair Expo in Baltimore, I purchased Shea Butter. The shea butter I purchased was very hard.....so I decided to put it in a blender to soften it up. I added vitamin E oil, Organic Olive Oil & Organic Lavender Essential Oil (my first recipe). I was excited about my first concoction....still not knowing Satin Blends was in my future. I took my concoction to work to let my coworker try it. She loved it and encouraged me to sell it. That was the beginning of Satin Blends!
In meeting entrepreneurs, I find that life circumstances are often the push to entrepreneurship. What was your motivation?
My circumstance was an ovarian cancer scare in 2006. This scare caused me to change my lifestyle to a holistic lifestyle. My new lifestyle change led me to study nutrition and in turn into entrepreneurship. Through my circumstance I found my passion & my purpose. I had NOOOO idea when I changed my lifestyle in 2006 that I would end up owning two businesses. All Glory to God.
Personal care products are your business. Why this industry?
Well, I didn't choose to enter into the personal care industry. I stumbled across this path as I was living my holistic lifestyle….. in search of a good product to use on my skin and hair. I truly believe in my heart of hearts that this is where I'm supposed to be and this is what I'm supposed to be doing - making Skin & Hair Care Products.
What is the most challenging custom blend you have had to create?
My most challenging blend so far has been my Loc & Twist butter. I wrote the Loc & Twist butter recipe when I first started making products. To me the product was just OK but I knew it could be better. I perfect my products according to customer feedback. I have a customer, Laquita Thomas-Banks who purchased the Loc & Twist butter. I adjusted the Loc & Twist butter based on Laquita’s feedback. Laquita twist & braid hair on a regular basis…..when Laquita told me she loved the adjusted Loc & Twist Butter….I knew it was right!
Our readers are aware of your skin care products, what other products do you offer?
Satin Blends product line includes Body Butter, Whipped Body Cream, Liquid Body Butter (Body Oil), Bath Salts, Sugar Scrubs, Dead Sea Salt Scrubs, Hand & Foot Scrubs, Vegan Lip Balm, Braid-Scalp-Hair Oil, Loc & Twist Butter and Hair Butter…there is more to come! All products are natural and organic. One year later after the birth of Satin Blends, I followed my heart and launched a second business.
The name of my new business is Satin Soul Natural Wear. SSNW is a Tee Shirt & Apparel line for those NATURAL at heart.
Has your choice of hairstyle inspired you in other facets of your life?
My choice of hairstyle (going natural) inspired my creative side. Sometimes I shock myself with my creativity. I know this sounds funny but I consider myself a new age hippie (free spirited, eccentric & a flower child). I am attracted to Peace & Love symbols. I love naturalness and everything associated with it. My hair has inspired me to embrace who I am.
What was the most difficult obstacle to overcome in starting your own business?
The most difficult aspect to overcome in starting my own business was fear. Everything happened so fast, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to start a business…I was scared. As time went on, I let go of the fear and allowed God to lead me in His direction. I now have a vision of where I want Satin Blends & Satin Soul Natural Wear to go - my vision is my guide.
