An Interview with the owners of Epic Curls

E-mail Print PDF

While caring for my mother's hair, she mentioned that she met a young lady who owns a natural hair care business in a local mall.  One day I took it upon myself to find this place and when I did an interview had to follow!

I love to support small business and was delighted to find that this business was owned by three sisters.  Really, they are blood sisters!  I had the pleasure of meeting with two of them and if you read on you will see a grand treat just for you - readers of All Tressed Up!

The Story of Epic Curls

For decades curly girls have been on the prowl for the perfect hair product that will minimize frizz, maintain moisture and quite frankly produce positive results for their hair type.  As you approach the Victoria’s Secret store in Regency Square Mall, look to your left and you will discover another great secret; especially for the curly girl – Epic Curls.

Epic Curls is a small retail location (kiosk) dedicated to helping women discover products that will work best for their hair.  This curly boutique opened for business on February 10, 2012 and has since acquired a considerable following and loyal client base.

An Interview with Dawn Yerger of Nappturalite Media

E-mail Print PDF

Upon first listen, I was hooked!  As I began to become familiar with Nappturalite Radio, I immediately began to gain quite a bit of respect, admiration and inspiration from its founder, Dawn Yerger.  She is the mind behind Nappturalite Media - parent company of Nappturalite Radio, Naturalpreneur Central and more.

It is my privilege and honor to feature a woman of this caliber on All Tressed Up.  She posesses vision, tenacity and keen business sense.  Please take a few moments to get to know Dawn Yerger.

What led you to start a radio show focused on natural hair?

Well, many people don't know this, but I had two other radio shows and I was the co-host on another radio show before I started Nappturalite Radio. Those shows did well, and I enjoyed producing them and getting to interview well-known experts. When I went natural back in 2009, I was co-hosting the Jaye Today Show (hosted by Jaye Reliford). She asked us about how our weeks went and I shared that I had just done the Big Chop and how I was learning all this new info about going natural on YouTube. The next thing we knew, it was the end of the show and we had talked about natural hair the entire time! I told Jaye, "We should do a whole show on natural hair!" She agreed and Nappturalite Radio was born. I figured that I was having so much fun learning about natural hair, that other people would too if I could share what I was learning with them.

An interview with Lady Kinnks of Kinnks.com

E-mail Print PDF

I have had the pleasure of meeting this woman and even working together with her for a natural hair event.  She has her very own blog and website and also sells her very own t-shirts.  Her blog focus more on the psychological aspects of the natural hair.  Her posts and those of her guest authors give you food for thought and help you to realize that natural hair is more than a hairstyle.  The choice runs deep. Most recently, she has launched her very own natural hair event calendar.

Let's take a moment to get to know Lady Kinnks of Kinnks.com.

What prompted you to begin your blog?

Looking back at my natural hair journey it was awkward.  Around 2001, there were very few resources...and no kool words like BC and TWA.  How ridiculous is it for me not to understand my own natural hair?  It took me a few years to really figure out my hair.     In the supermarket, or while getting my oil changed when women would stop me and ask about my hair.  I always wished for a one stop website.  A place I could go to find helpful information.  Kinnks.com was born.

An interview with Laquita Thomas-Banks of BoBeam

E-mail Print PDF

Please allow me to introduce you to a wonderful woman, Laquita Thomas-Banks.  She is another natural hair lover that I've connected with over time.  As a freelance writer, product creator and family woman, I am amazed at how she does it oh so well!  You have seen a number of product reviews from her line (BoBeam) here on All Tressed Up.  Let's get to know Laquita.

What prompted you to begin the journey of creating products for natural hair?

I started making products for fun. I had been styling hair for years - both natural and relaxed and I would use the things I made on my clients. I would also give shampoo bars as gifts to my family and friends on holidays. They (mainly my mother :o) kept telling me that I should sale the products versus giving them away and years later I decided to go for it.

It was no mistake that this woman and I connected.  I had been yearning for an overall cleanse since I had not experienced one since roughly 2009.  With all of the life changes that have taken place, I knew that a cleanse would help me to focus.  She and I met, connected and the rest is history!

'A' is for Asparagus

While contemplating how to carry on with the blog, I received a message from a trusted source inviting me to sample the new asparagus dishes at Noodles & Company.  Be certain to try them soon because these dishes will only be available while asparagus is in season (during the Spring season).

I invited by Gemini Twin to come along and together we sampled a few dishes where asparagus was the featured ingredient.  Before moving into the experience, let us first delve into the benefits of asparagus.

What is asparagus?

Believe it or not some of us are unable to identify a vegetable if we saw it.  I will admit that at some point, asparagus was one that I could not identify.  Now easily recognizable by its spear shape, I have learned to welcome this vegetable into my diet.  While I have yet to cook it myself, the day is coming soon.

Health Benefits
According to the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board, asparagus is “…a nutrient-dense food which in [is] high in folic acid and is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin.” In addition to these positive characteristics, asparagus also boasts a few anti-carcinogenic properties as well.  This is key in a world where we often have to question the integrity of our food growth practices.

Beauty Benefits
Taking a look at the high levels of nutrients in asparagus, we have already learned from past posts that vitamin A is also nicknamed the beauty vitamin and can be found in more of your orange-colored fruits and vegetables.  We are talking increased skin elasticity and more with vitamin A!  The high level of folic acid (a B vitamin) alone aids in proper cell growth, protein use and production.   Hair and nails are primarily comprised of protein!  Start from the inside and reap the benefits completely!

Meal Ideas
Thanks to the folks at Noodles & Company, we explored some wonderfully creative meal ideas utilizing asparagus.  Some are actually rather simple and can be easily duplicated (somewhat that is) at home.
