An Interview with Dawn Yerger of Nappturalite Media

E-mail Print PDF

Upon first listen, I was hooked!  As I began to become familiar with Nappturalite Radio, I immediately began to gain quite a bit of respect, admiration and inspiration from its founder, Dawn Yerger.  She is the mind behind Nappturalite Media - parent company of Nappturalite Radio, Naturalpreneur Central and more.

It is my privilege and honor to feature a woman of this caliber on All Tressed Up.  She posesses vision, tenacity and keen business sense.  Please take a few moments to get to know Dawn Yerger.

What led you to start a radio show focused on natural hair?

Well, many people don't know this, but I had two other radio shows and I was the co-host on another radio show before I started Nappturalite Radio. Those shows did well, and I enjoyed producing them and getting to interview well-known experts. When I went natural back in 2009, I was co-hosting the Jaye Today Show (hosted by Jaye Reliford). She asked us about how our weeks went and I shared that I had just done the Big Chop and how I was learning all this new info about going natural on YouTube. The next thing we knew, it was the end of the show and we had talked about natural hair the entire time! I told Jaye, "We should do a whole show on natural hair!" She agreed and Nappturalite Radio was born. I figured that I was having so much fun learning about natural hair, that other people would too if I could share what I was learning with them.

An interview with Lady Kinnks of Kinnks.com

E-mail Print PDF

I have had the pleasure of meeting this woman and even working together with her for a natural hair event.  She has her very own blog and website and also sells her very own t-shirts.  Her blog focus more on the psychological aspects of the natural hair.  Her posts and those of her guest authors give you food for thought and help you to realize that natural hair is more than a hairstyle.  The choice runs deep. Most recently, she has launched her very own natural hair event calendar.

Let's take a moment to get to know Lady Kinnks of Kinnks.com.

What prompted you to begin your blog?

Looking back at my natural hair journey it was awkward.  Around 2001, there were very few resources...and no kool words like BC and TWA.  How ridiculous is it for me not to understand my own natural hair?  It took me a few years to really figure out my hair.     In the supermarket, or while getting my oil changed when women would stop me and ask about my hair.  I always wished for a one stop website.  A place I could go to find helpful information.  Kinnks.com was born.

An interview with Laquita Thomas-Banks of BoBeam

E-mail Print PDF

Please allow me to introduce you to a wonderful woman, Laquita Thomas-Banks.  She is another natural hair lover that I've connected with over time.  As a freelance writer, product creator and family woman, I am amazed at how she does it oh so well!  You have seen a number of product reviews from her line (BoBeam) here on All Tressed Up.  Let's get to know Laquita.

What prompted you to begin the journey of creating products for natural hair?

I started making products for fun. I had been styling hair for years - both natural and relaxed and I would use the things I made on my clients. I would also give shampoo bars as gifts to my family and friends on holidays. They (mainly my mother :o) kept telling me that I should sale the products versus giving them away and years later I decided to go for it.

An interview with Angela Baker of Goddess Body Wellness

E-mail Print PDF

It was no mistake that this woman and I connected.  I had been yearning for an overall cleanse since I had not experienced one since roughly 2009.  With all of the life changes that have taken place, I knew that a cleanse would help me to focus.  She and I met, connected and the rest is history!

She is in the business of uplifting women and helping them to realize the Goddess within.  Through nutrition, fitness and a mind over matter mentality this woman is committed to healing the world - one woman at a time.  Let's learn a bit more about Angela Baker and her business, Goddess Body Wellness.

What exactly is a goddess?  A goddess can be loosely defined as a woman of great beauty or grace.  However, there are many more ways in which the term can be defined.

  1. A female being of supernatural powers or attributes, believed in and worshiped by a people.

An Interview with Kiara Lee, author of 'Light-Skinned, Dark-Skinned or In-Between?'

E-mail Print PDF

Colorism is a term that may or may not be new to you.  Regardless of your familiarity with the term, the fact that it is still an issue in our society is an unfortunate truth.  Kiara Lee, author of Light-Skinned, Dark-Skinned or In-Between?, has taken the issue of colorism and self-published her very own children's book about the topic.

I had the honor and pleasure of serving on a panel at the University of Richmond with this young lady and I was certainly impressed.  Not only is she writing and self-publishing, this sister is also the mind behind a documentary sharing the same name.  I am so impressed by this young woman who has yet to complete her undergraduate studies.  She is uplifting our youth and making powerful moves to address the issue of colorism and ultimately self-love.  Let's meet Kiara Lee...

For those that are unfamiliar with the term colorism, can you explain what that means?

Colorism is discrimination, usually within an ethnic group, where someone is judged based on the complexion of his or her skin. (i.e.- people being treated differently because they are light-skinned, brown-skinned or dark-skinned).

The Kitchen: An Ingredients Journey

Well folks, we have decided to consolidate.  Once upon a time we shared ingredient information with you via a sub-domain.  Beginning today, we're bringing that content inside.  We want this to be in all-inclusive experience for you. The Kitchen will now live on on this very website!  No need to venture off to another website!

One of the goals of All Tressed Up is to create awareness in an effort to help you make the right choices when selecting products.  Ultimately, this will help you choose more natural products.  As you already know, the skin is the largest organ of the body.  We are smothering it with lotions, potions and scrubs that are full of chemicals.  Let's make well informed product choices and put an end to supporting products that are designed to produce profit while ignoring things such as side-effects after continued use.
