Wedding Fashion!!!

The decision had already been made to elope.  My vision was classic, vintage and chic.  What better way to accomplish these goals but to go to the thrift store!!!  I chose to focus on Goodwill and the craft stores to achieve the look I wanted on a limited budget.

The Suit

I envisioned a pencil skirt in winter white and/or cream.  While perusing Goodwill, I found exactly what I was looking for.  I literally screamed 'Shut Up!' when I pulled it off the rack.  The woman beside me was laughing at me. LOL! The ticket price was $19.99 for a two-piece skirt suit!  I got to the register and the price was $10!  I paid ten dollars for my wedding suit, yall! Win!

I realized that the skirt did not fit in that lovely pencil skirt way, so I took it to a local seamstress who altered it perfectly!  Because of my quick turnaround time and because the skirt was constructed so well, the fee was $35.

So, the total cost of my wedding suit was $45.

The Shoes

Now, this is where the budget got pushed a bit.  I went to DSW and as usual, walked straight to the clearance rack.  Guess what?!?!  The leopard print shoes I wanted were right there!!!  The texture was actually furry.  I was hooked.

I paid approximately $35 for my shoes.

Wedding Makeup!!!

E-mail Print PDF

There I was contemplating wearing makeup or not.  If I chose to wear makeup, I would have to ask someone that I didn't know. Ugh!  The honey and I were eloping and I just couldn't let the secret out! This was not going to work.  I've had a few folks do my makeup that have done a great job. Decisions, decisions....

I debated coming up with a story about a photo-shoot, but then I just felt bad about lying to my girl! Well, I finally decided to let the cat out of the bag to ONE person - Charlene T. Easter of Epiphany Beauty.  She got me right for my very first news appearance and I just love her!!! (You already knew that, though!)

We fleshed out the details over the phone and this Makeup Artist Extraordinaire did her thing!  She got me right in about an hour (actually less than that) and I got foundation, lashes and of course I had to have a red lip!!!!  I love a red lip, yall!!!

My Favorite Foundations, Part I

E-mail Print PDF

As someone who suffers from adult acne from time-to-time, I have been on a serious quest for naturally, flawless skin! After a particularly difficult bout that left me with quite a bit of hyper-pigmentation, I found myself questioning whether or not my current foundation might be playing role in my skin care woes. Therefore, I decided that I would spend a few months researching various foundation brands and types in an effort to create a more even-toned complexion.

My biggest concern was finding a foundation that would provide the full coverage I need with a natural-looking finish that would not cause additional breakouts. I did not want to look or feel like I was wearing a heavy mask of foundation, especially in the midst of extreme summer heat. So, the search was on and as a professional makeup artist with a massive wish list, I had some great brands in mind to start testing to find my Holy Grail foundation.

Eve Pearl HD Foundation

First up to bat was Emmy-Award Winning Celebrity Makeup Artist, Eve Pearl’s HD Foundations. Besides the fact that this phenomenal makeup artist created and uses these products on celebrities, I love the tag line  – Makeup with Skincare for Every Complexion. These products are marketed as CosmeNutrients, a fusion of cosmetics with nutrients, and are oil-free,  paraben free, fragrance free and cruelty free. After reading her book, ‘Plastic Surgery without the Surgery, the Miracle of Makeup Techniques’ and learning Eve actually suffered from acne too, I felt she would definitely create products that would not exacerbate her condition and I was correct.

Pretty Princess Makeup Tutorial: The Lips

E-mail Print PDF

Thus far we've covered the pretty princess face and eyes.  What would a makeover be without a luscious lip?!

Optional: Use a Lip Liner in a color that is close to your lip tone or to add more color it would be great to use a colored liner to lightly line your lips and fill them in slightly to add color and help your gloss last longer.

Use the applicator from your lip gloss to slowly fill in your lips over the liner, blending out as you apply so the liner is not apparent.  You cannot go wrong with Milani Cosmetics Gloss for a little extra sparkle. Finish with a setting spray to help makeup stay put for the entire night such as Model-In-A-Bottle or Urban Decay All Nighter Spray, they sell these online and you can also try Sephora or Ulta, they sell minis also.

Now that you’ve completed your Pretty Princess look, get dressed and get ready to go have a royal time!

Pretty Princess Makeup Tutorial: The Eyes

E-mail Print PDF

Now that you have your foundation set, it is time to play up those eyes!

Step One: Apply a Cream Shadow, Gel Eye Liner or Eye Shadow Primer in a color that is close to your skin tone or a couple of shades lighter across your eye lid up to your crease and blend well. Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24 – Hour Cream Gel Shadow or L’oreal HiP Studio Secrets Cream Eyeliner.

Step Two: Use a Shimmer or Satin Powder Eye Shadow or Loose Pigment with a sponge-tip applicator or eye shadow brush and pat it a little at a time onto your eye lid up to your crease, blend well (Note: it’s easier to apply a little at a time and add color until it’s your desired intensity than to add too much color at once and make a mess.)

Step Three: Use a Matte Powder Eye Shadow or Loose Pigment that is two shades darker than your skin tone with a sponge-tip applicator or eye shadow brush and apply it to the crease and outer V area of your eye by swiping back and forth gently, a little shadow at a time to build to the intensity that you want; be sure to blend out your colors so there are no obvious lines.

Optional: Use a Matte Powder Eye Shadow or Loose Pigment with a sponge-tip applicator or eye shadow brush and apply it to the brow bone and blend it down; use a clean small fluffy brush or sponge-tip applicator to gently blend out all the harsh lines so all three colors look seamless.

Malikah Divine Wholistic Skincare: Berry Beautiful

As the years go by, we as women have to pay a bit more attention to our skin.  Like Ledisi said, I'm going through changes, yall!  The days of super flawless skin is beginning to take a bit of work and a certain level on consciousness.  I have to be mindful of my water intake, the foods I eat and yes..an exercise regimen is heavy on the brain - not happening yet, but on the brain.

Anywhoo, I'm beginning to notice subtle blemishes.  I was told after a skin consultation with the product creator, Malikah Divine, that it was due to dehydration (i.e., I need to drink more water.).  She recommended this product and advised that I refrigerate it and spritz my face each morning.  Let's review...

'A' is for Asparagus

While contemplating how to carry on with the blog, I received a message from a trusted source inviting me to sample the new asparagus dishes at Noodles & Company.  Be certain to try them soon because these dishes will only be available while asparagus is in season (during the Spring season).

I invited by Gemini Twin to come along and together we sampled a few dishes where asparagus was the featured ingredient.  Before moving into the experience, let us first delve into the benefits of asparagus.

What is asparagus?

Believe it or not some of us are unable to identify a vegetable if we saw it.  I will admit that at some point, asparagus was one that I could not identify.  Now easily recognizable by its spear shape, I have learned to welcome this vegetable into my diet.  While I have yet to cook it myself, the day is coming soon.

Health Benefits
According to the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board, asparagus is “…a nutrient-dense food which in [is] high in folic acid and is a good source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, and thiamin.” In addition to these positive characteristics, asparagus also boasts a few anti-carcinogenic properties as well.  This is key in a world where we often have to question the integrity of our food growth practices.

Beauty Benefits
Taking a look at the high levels of nutrients in asparagus, we have already learned from past posts that vitamin A is also nicknamed the beauty vitamin and can be found in more of your orange-colored fruits and vegetables.  We are talking increased skin elasticity and more with vitamin A!  The high level of folic acid (a B vitamin) alone aids in proper cell growth, protein use and production.   Hair and nails are primarily comprised of protein!  Start from the inside and reap the benefits completely!

Meal Ideas
Thanks to the folks at Noodles & Company, we explored some wonderfully creative meal ideas utilizing asparagus.  Some are actually rather simple and can be easily duplicated (somewhat that is) at home.
