Rockin' a Red Lip!

E-mail Print PDF

All right, now that you have decided to participate in the All Tressed Up “Red Lip Challenge,” here are a few helpful hints on selecting and applying the proper shade based on your undertone and skin tone. There are a lot of options on the market and it can be somewhat scary when looking for the right red for you, especially for women of color with deep brown skin. From matte to cream to liquid to glosses to stains – it can be a bit overwhelming for most. But no need to fear; there is a red for everyone and always remember, it’s just makeup and easily wipes off so have fun experimenting!

Selecting the Right Red

First, let’s talk about your undertone. Your skin tone is obvious and typically falls into a category such as fair, light, tan, medium, dark or deep dark. Your undertone is somewhat different and can be just as obvious to the naked eye but sometimes not so much.

Please welcome the newest member to the All Tressed Up team - Ms. Charlene T. Easter.  This was a definite Divine connection!

Charlene T. Easter has a passion for makeup and more importantly, a passion for helping women feel beautiful and confident by "enhancing" what God has already provided! Since her last semester at Virginia Commonwealth University, Charlene has been "playing in makeup," first as an intern with the Estee Lauder Companies and then as a Mary Kay Consultant providing bridal and special occasion makeup services. After taking about a five year break from makeup to focus on her full-time career, Charlene realized how much she missed the artistry as well as making personal connections with other women through beauty products. So with a renewed dedication, Charlene began pursuing professional makeup training classes and workshops and in 2007 Epiphany Beauty Professional Makeup Services was born!

The Red Lip Challenge

E-mail Print PDF

Well, I've had this love affair with red lips for a few years now.  To tell you the truth, I had previously been ridiculously afraid of the infamous red lip.  You see, I considered the red lip to scream 'SEXY'!!!  I just wasn't ready for that.  One day I decided to just give it a try.

Today, I consider the red lip to not only scream 'sexy', but also 'glamorous' and 'confident' - when executed correctly that is.

Within the next two weeks, we will welcome our new Makeup Pro to the All Tressed Up team.  She is awesome and I love her approach to makeup.  As with all things All Tressed Up, she'll be providing you with some natural alternatives to make-up and of course what's hot in all things makeup.

What better way to welcome her than with some beautifully glossed or painted lips!  We'll welcome her with our kissey-faces!  Yessss!  So, show us your best red lip!

Tahira Cosmetics: Natural lip gloss

E-mail Print PDF

This natural journey just keeps getting better!  I absolutely love lip gloss!!  Sometimes, all you need is a shimmery, plump lip to set off your look.  Some time ago, I attended a local event dedicated to highlighting local artists and was introduced to Tahira Cosmetics.

I came to the event with bare lips because I knew that she would be there.  I found the table and was more than ready to try on some gloss!!  Based on her explanation, she currently has several product options:

Natural lip gloss - The packaging on these lip glosses are genius!  There is a cute little mirror on the side and a clickable light that you can toggle on and off just in case you need to get that lip gloss popping in the dark. Ow!

Physicians Formula: Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting + Serum

As you know, I am a very low-maintenance type of girl.  Make-up, unlike most beauty topics for me, is not one that I am completely obsessed about.  I think it is pretty and can do wonderful things.  I just have this fear of becoming addicted to it.  You know how you see someone and then you see them again without make-up and they are somewhat unrecognizable???  Yeah, I don't want that.  Nor do I want folks to ask me if I am sick all because I'm not wearing my 'face'.

With all that being said...LOL!  I will dabble in some eyeliner though!  Truth be told, I used to be addicted to it.  I used a pencil to line my eyes and fill in my brows.  Oh, yes I did!  I actually felt naked without my brows filled in.  I did away with the filling in of the brows and even arching my brows (big deal!), but I do like a little eyeliner from time to time.

Featured Product

Taliah Waajid: Total Body Black Earth Shampoo

Now, I know you've seen me rant about not using shampoo on my own hair.  I use this product on my clients.  Shampoo and lather is expected when one visits the salon.  If I must shampoo, I prefer to use one that I know works and one that contains less harsh ingredients.  I have had nothing but positive outcomes from this shampoo.  Some of the comments were the hair feels extremely soft (prior to a conditioner being applied), the scalp felt clean and the fragrance is lovely!

I have used this shampoo on two clients - one with extremely dry scalp and another with a diagnosed scalp condition.  Both clients had rave reviews of this shampoo.  I typically use this shampoo along with the Taliah Waajid Enhancing Herbal Conditioner.

Investment: $8.00 USD

Ingredients: Pure Distilled Water, Natural Herbs, Indian Hemp, Olive Oil, Wheat Germ, Yarrow Root, Sodium Laureate Sulfate, Rosemary, African Herbal Complex, Sea Salt, Sage, Silk Protein, Corn Oils, Corn Silk, Vitamin E, Fruit Bio-Flavonoids, Bay Laurel, Cocomide (Coconut Bio-Flavonoid)

The Kitchen

Calendula

I was first introduced to this herb through the best darn fashion manicurist in the world - Ms. Angel Williams!  I inquired about natural remedies for my skin because I deal with this annoying breakout each and every summer. Ugh!  It is totally a killer for sandal season!

She told me about calendula and shared that it was in fact a healing herb.  Calendula is also great for wound healing and yields a soothing feeling for irritated skin.  The tea of calendula can be drank and is rumored to aid with bladder infections, menstrual cramps and even pink eye!
