Weekly Webcam

The Weekly Webcam series is meant to encourage you to try new things with your hair as well as motivate lil 'ol me to do my own hair.  Unfortunately, most stylists don't do their own hair.  Well, I have decided that I must look the part.  Enjoy!

Salon Shot #4: Twisted Perspective

E-mail Print PDF

Well, there is a story that goes along with this client.  She came in for her consultation and shared a few interesting stories about her natural hair journey and was quite apprehensive about wearing her own hair.  You see, she had already been convinced that 'natural' was the way to go.  She just didn't know what to do with her hair.  And so, the wig-loving began.

Oh, how I wish I could have snagged a before and after type of deal with her because the day she came in for her service, she was in fact wearing one of those beauties.  She chooses really nice ones though - must give her credit!

We discussed style ideas and started out with a Pompadour-ish look, but that really was not her style.  I ended up twisting the front into individual two-strand twists and pinning it in place. She never knew what she could do with her hair until then!

Weekly Webcam #17: There Go My Bangs, B!

E-mail Print PDF

I've been experimenting and taking a number of photos with different styles here lately.  On this particular day, I wanted bangs - big poofy ones!  My sister is going to crack up by this title - I just had to put that out there.  Just for you: Oo-wee Look at she! LOL!

This style is all about tucking, folding and pinning.  Many asked me if I had cut my hair and a grown man even told me that he just loved my hair - twice.  I don't know about you, but when a grown man compliments your hair and actually says 'I love your hair'...yeah, that's special.

Salon Shot #3: Coil Love

E-mail Print PDF

More often than not, I receive calls from new naturals who are at a loss regarding what to do with their hair.  So, you've chopped it off, rocked your fro and now what?  The Teeny Weeny Afro (TWA) is nice, cute and oh so simple, but what about when you're tired of that?  What about those curls you see everywhere?

Coils, comb coils or baby locs may be your answer.  I like to describe them as miniature shirley temple curls that add a bit more interest to the amazing 'fro that you may be tired of wearing.  Our model came knowing exactly what she wanted.

Weekly Webcam #16: Whoissugar inspired

E-mail Print PDF

I'm baaa-aaaaack!  I'm returning to show you a straight hair-do.  This first one was completely jacked from 'Whoissugar'.  That's right, your girl was on YouTube after writing an Examiner article, went back the next morning and saw this video in my suggested videos.

I posted one of her videos some time ago and after seeing how cute and simple this style was; I just had to try it and of course share with you!  My hair is not as long or as full as whoissugar yet it still worked.

This style will work for un-straightened hair (although it may not render as much hang time), weaves, braids, locs, and of course straightened hair.

Salon Shot #2: Electrifying Twist Set

E-mail Print PDF

Welcome back to another rendition of the Weekly Webcam - Salon Shot version!  Well, now that I can incorporate some salon shots, this will definitely be a weekly occurrence.  This salon shot is composed of one of my favorites.  I love to twist!  This particular client has a twist set that is a bit asymmetrical and electrifying at the same time.

LaVida Given By Nature: Ginger, Juice & Berries Hairdress

Yet another LaVida Given By Nature product that has been put to the test.  The name alone is very intriguing. Let's go in on this one...

Packaging

Unlike the other two products I have reviewed from this line, this particular product does not come in a flip-top bottle.  This is key.  I want to be able to actually use my product and with this one the jar was perfect because of the consistency of the product.   It comes in a jar reminiscent of the good 'ol (not so much) grease jars we grew up using.  Dax immediately comes to mind.  Oh, the memories!  This is sooo not Dax though...!!!  Again her color scheme and graphic design is very professional.  Hands down, the presentation is on point.

Fragrance

Ginger is the first word in the product's name and that is what I got a shot of first and foremost.  Because I am not a huge fan of ginger as a fragrance for my hair, I was a bit torn with this one.  It was certainly not awful, but definitely not as tantalizing as the Tahitian Coconut Body Oil or the Carrot & Castor Oil Conditioning Hair Oil.

The Kitchen

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

This ingredient can be found in many of our hair and skincare products.  Its primary function is to remove dirt, oil and buildup regardless of the surface.  I say this because the same ingredient that we spread on our body surfaces is also used (in higher concentrations of course) in engine degreasers and floor cleaners!  Can you imagine using the same chemical to clean your face/hair to clean your engine?!
