Queen of the Week: Teanesha Washington

E-mail Print PDF

Well, this beautiful woman I have known for quite some time.  Over these past few years I just kept seeing this glow about her and soon thereafter discovered that she was loving on her natural hair. Yayyyy!!!  Her style of choice is not a twist-out, 'fro or any other naturalista favorite.  She wears a little something else.  Let me just tell you...that little something else looks good!

Let's meet our Queen of the Week - Teanesha Washington!

Who does your hair?

My stylist is actually my cousin.  Her name is Teresa Terry and she currently has a storefront called “From Her Head to Yours: Virgin Hair Boutique” which is located at 217 E. Clay Street, Richmond, VA.  Her number is (804) 716-1468.  She’s the certifiable BOMB!!!  PLEASE check her out!

What are your three favorite products and why?

Hands down, the one product that gets the most use in my hair care regimen is virgin coconut oil!  Since winning it in last year’s All Tressed Up blogoversary drawing I have been totally addicted.  My family and I use it on our hair, our skin and even in our bath water.  Being natural for the past 4 years it seems to be one of the only products that keeps my hair shiny, moisturized and soft (I have super kinky type 4C hair) and in my opinion has helped tremendously with growth retention.

However, it is a toss-up between the coconut oil and good ol’ H2O!!  People often fail to realize that water is your hair’s BFF!  I’m no hair expert, but I do know for a fact that spraying my natural hair down a few times a week with water (just to re-moisturize, not to soak the hair) has definitely helped with breakage and makes detangling a lot easier.  Not that I promote any specific leave in conditioner but I do tend to put in a couple teaspoons of leave in conditioner for every 6 oz. of water.  Shake it up in a water bottle and lubricate the situation!!

Thirdly, because I live by my virgin Brazilian (or Indian) hair extensions as protective styling, the one product that has never failed me is Garnier Fructis’ Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz serum.  I love how clean it smells and there is no buildup, like EVER!  It adds shine and works well on my exposed natural hair and makes my extensions appear very natural.

Please describe your hair routine.

My hair maintenance routine is SUPER simple and it has to be since I’m juggling a job, husband, a one year old son.  Like I said before, my hair is 100% natural (no chemical processing or color).  I live by my sew-ins which I get refreshed every 10 weeks for protective styling.  Depending on the look I’m going for, I would leave some portion of my own hair exposed (for a more natural look) and I rely on the weekly use of a curling iron or flat iron to tame my kinky texture just on the exposed areas.

I use heat about twice a week – MAX!!  I typically air dry when I wash my hair, which is usually once a week.  From there, I use the products and methods I mentioned before to condition and manage frizz and I enjoy the versatility of my hair extensions with the comfort of knowing my “real” hair is safely maintained underneath.  Works for me!

What is your favorite quote of the moment?

This is a hard one, however I’m currently living by and fully believing in the entire chapter of Hebrews 13!  Read it and be blessed!

How does it feel to be selected as the All Tressed Up Queen of the Week?

I’m truly honored to be this week’s All Tressed Up Queen simply because I spent so many years damaging and not loving my hair and now one of my biggest insecurities has gotten me recognized.

I see so many of us walking around with obvious weaves, but not this sister.  My thing is...if you're going to do...do it right.  She is taking the time to care for her natural hair while rocking a style that she can handle given her busy lifestyle.  No doubt about it, she is gorgeous with or without the Brazilian-Indian in her family. Thank you, Teanesha!!! And yes, Ms. Terry is certifiable!!!

Pura Body Natural: Chocolate Hair Smoothie

After falling in love with this line's cupuacu butter, I thought it would only be right to give this chocolate hair smoothie a whirl!  I was a little reluctant because believe it or not, I am not a huge fan of chocolate.  When I think of chocolate in my hair, I immediately think 'Yuck' and 'I don't want my hair smelling like chocolate!'.  Well, this product did not let me down!

Fragrance

Contrary to what you may assume, this product does not reek chocolate.  It has a hint of chocolate with a creamy flair to it.

Panthenol

During my client consultations, I ask prospective clients to bring in the products they are currently using. We review the products and I make recommendations based on the condition of their hair.  I consider myself to be knowledgeable about some ingredients, but have no problem admitting that I am unclear about others.  One of the ingredients that I commonly see on ingredients lists is panthenol.

Through my reading, I have heard many consider it to be a 'hair plumper', moisturizer...you name it!  After seeing it on a number of products that receive natural hair love, I became a bit curious about the ingredient.  I did my research and came up with my very own understanding of what this ingredient does for our hair and skin.

What is it?

Panthenol is a substance that is commonly used in skin and hair care products.  You may also hear it coined as 'pro-vitamin B'.

Where does it come from?

The substance can be derived from plant, animal or synthetically created.  Based on my findings, there is no way to tell where the instance in your particular product derives.  Many natural or vegan products may include labeling to notify you that the product contains no animal products or may even go as far to place '(plant derived)' behind the ingredient.
