The Obsession

Can you spend an hour or more in beauty supply stores?  Do you have multiple subscriptions to or can't help but pick up the latest hair magazine?  Is your 'under the sink' storage area so full that you have a special product area for your impulse purchases?  It's offiicial - you're obsessed.

The Attitude

All Tressed Up is more than the name of a website, it's an attitude.  Ask anyone - when you look good you do for the most part, feel good.  This website gives the everyday woman and/or man the opportunity to share just how wonderful you are!  Are you All Tressed Up today?

Queen of the Week: Sherrie H.

E-mail Print PDF

This beautiful queen was spotted in the local supermarket.  Yes, I knew her previously and had seen her before, but this time was different.  I saw her glow and then I noticed her hair!  She had always worn a short 'do (since I had known her) and this new 'do was short and it was 'au naturale!  You know I went crazy, right?!

Needless to say, I asked and she obliged.  Meet Sherrie H.

This year, I did something dramatic and daring and fun - I cut off all of my hair.  While I always maintained a short cropped hairstyle, going natural was hard for me.  Why? Because it represented change and with change there is fear of the unknown.  But, this year has been full of positive change  - facing fears, challenging myself and choosing to do things differently.  So, I woke up one morning and decided to take the plunge and the world didn't end.

Cutting my hair was like reinventing myself.  I felt like a snake, shedding skin.   After 10 years of back and forth, I finally did it.  Nothing should take that long to decide and it never will again!   I didn't realize how much my daily activities revolved around my hair. Now, I have an exercise plan and a personal trainer who I work out with once a week.  I am taking swimming lessons and can't wait to go to the beach!

Cutting the hair was representative of a new way of thinking, feeling and being.  It really wasn't as much about the hair as it was about getting to a point in life where you feel most comfortable in your own skin.  This is the best I've ever felt!

Who does your hair?

First, I'd like to give a shout out to Francine Coy of LaPaonne Hair Designs who provided over 25+ years of hair care for me.  Thank you, Francine!  I currently get my hair cut by Cheezi at Beautiy Studio, 3034 Parkwood Avenue in Richmond, VA.
Note: Her cut was beautiful!  Very short and ultra feminine...  Get it Cheezi!

What are your three favorite products?  Why?

I try hard not to be a product junkie but I am always open to trying something new.  I currently use a combination of vegetable glycerin that you can buy at the health food store and 2 Qhemet Biologics products - Honey and Olive Hydrating Balm and the Amla and Olive Heavy Cream - its really good stuff!

Please describe your hair routine.

The beauty of my short hair is that I really don't have a routine.  I simply wash and moisturize it when necessary, brush and go.

What is your favorite quote of the moment?

"When people show you who they really are, believe them."

How does it feel to be selected as All Tressed Up Queen of the Week?

It feels extremely validating.  Thank you for allowing me to share my story.

Is there anything you would like to promote or share with the world?

I would encourage those on the fence about doing the big chop to do it.  If it is something you've been thinking about, try it.  If you don't like it, your hair will grow back - don't worry.  And, one more thing - sometimes we say that we don't care about what other people think about our decisions but most of us do care.  That is okay - just don't let what others think of your decision for change to get in the way of that change.

Carol's Daughter: SweetHoneyDip Chocolate BrownShugah Scrub

SweetHoneyDip Chocolate BrownShugah ScrubAs you can probably tell, I am a fan of Carol's Daughter products.  During one of her promotions, she was offering this product as a freebie when you placed an order or $25.  What a deal!  This weekend I decided to pamper me and so I used this wonderful product.  With a name like SweetHoneyDip Chocolate BrownSugah Scrub , how could you go wrong?

Sniff
One of the first things I usually do with any product is smell.  Now, I am not a big fan of chocolate, but you must know this product does not have an overwhelming chocolaty fragrance.  It actually has a very soft and sweet fragrance.

Phthalates

We are already aware that products should be labeled with the ingredients.  More and more you are probably noticing labels that read ________ FREE.  Phthalates (pronounced fal-ates) can easily fill one of these blanks.  That's right, we've got another chemical on our hands, folks!

What is it?
A chemical compound, phthalates, is also know as a plasticizer.  In the beauty world, this chemical compound can be found in nail polish, makeup (maintaining the color) and lotions (even spreading).  Phthalates are also responsible for making your fragrance last longer.
